Grand Theft Auto, the first game in the Grand Theft Auto series, was released on Windows PCs in 1997/1998 and also for PlayStation . The game is set in three different fictional cities, Liberty City, San Andreas and Vice City. A reduced Game Boy Color port was later released.

Subsequently, two expansion packs were offered, both under the name of Grand Theft Auto: London. Although the concept of eras was not formally implemented until Grand Theft Auto III, it can be inferred that Grand Theft Auto: London, 1961, the second of the expansion packs, is the last game of the first Grand Theft Auto era canon.

Grand Theft Auto 2 (abbreviated as GTA2) is a video game that was released worldwide on October 22, 1999, by developer DMA Design (now Rockstar North); initially for the Windows operating system and the PlayStation console. The game was later ported to the Dreamcast console and the Game Boy Color. It is the sequel to 1997 hit Grand Theft Auto. The PC and Dreamcast versions of GTA2 are both rated M by the ESRB. The language and violence were toned down for the PlayStation and Game Boy Color versions which received a T rating. GTA2 was preceded by the original Grand Theft Auto and ultimately succeeded by Grand Theft Auto III.

Grand Theft Auto III (abbreviated as GTA III) is a sandbox-style action-adventure computer and video game developed by DMA Design (now Rockstar North), and published by Rockstar Games. GTA III is set in modern Liberty City, a fictional metropolitan city. The game's concept and gameplay, coupled with the use of a three dimensional game engine for the first time in the series, contributed to Grand Theft Auto III's positive reception upon its release; it became 2001's top selling video game[6] and is cited as a landmark in video games for its far-reaching influence within the industry.[7] GTA III's success was a significant factor in the series' subsequent popularity; as of 2008, five GTA prequels set before events in GTA III have been released. GTA III's violent and sexual content has also been the source of moral panic and controversy.

Grand Theft Auto: London, 1969 is a mission pack for Grand Theft Auto, and the second game in the series. London, 1969 was released on 31 March 1999 for DOS, Microsoft Windows. In April 1999, a version for Sony's PlayStation was released. The game uses the same game engine as Grand Theft Auto, thus giving the game graphics and gameplay similar to Grand Theft Auto. Like Grand Theft Auto, the mission pack is divided into sub-sections with short cut scenes between. London, 1969 was the first expansion pack released for PlayStation.[1]

The expansion introduces 30 new vehicles, 32 new missions, and instead of fictional locations based on real-life cities, as in Grand Theft Auto (Liberty City, San Andreas and Vice City), the game takes place in London in 1969. The player again plays the role of a criminal involved in organized crime.

The temporal setting has been exploited through cultural and historical references, including the appearance of a mod/James Bond-like character and use of stereotypical Cockney slang. In-game dialogue includes such lines as "Oi!, stop right there!", "You're nicked!" and "You're brown bread!" (i.e. You're dead).

Similar to the bonuses in Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto 2, the player receives a large cash reward for running over a group of "soap dodging hippies" with a car without braking. Successfully performing the trick displays the message "KEEP LONDON TIDY!" and awards a cash bonus.
