In Portal, the player is tasked to navigate through a seriesof rooms, using the "Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device"(sometimes referred to as the "portal gun"), a unit that can create aninter-spatial portal between flat planes. The portal gun creates portalends; although two colors of portal ends can be created (blue andorange), neither is specifically an entrance or exit. Only two portalsends, one of each color, can be created at any time, and if subsequentportal ends are created, the previously created end of the same coloris closed.
The portals create a visual and physical connection between any two different locations in 3D space.Portal ends are restricted to planar surfaces, but if the portal endsare on different planes, bizarre twists in geometry and gravity canoccur, such as the player walking into the portal through a wall and"falling" up out of the floor several feet behind where she started. Animportant aspect is that objects retain their momentumas they pass through the portals: an object that falls some distancebefore entering a portal will continue moving at that same speed out ofthe other end. This allows the player to launch objects, or eventhemselves, over great distances, both vertically and horizontally, amaneuver referred to as "flinging" by Valve.
Although the player character is equipped with heel springs to prevent damage from falling, various hazards in the test chambers, such as turret guns and floorscovered with toxic liquids, can kill the player. As well, damage can bereceived from objects falling through portals. If the player is killed, the game is generally resumed from the start of the test chamber (orbetween challenges in more complex rooms).
The portal gun allows several possible approaches to completing the various test chambers. In their initial preview of Portal, GameSpot gave an example of a gameplay scenario:
Two additional modes are unlocked upon completion of the main game.In Challenge mode, levels are revisited, which the goal of completingthe test chamber either with as little time, with the least number ofportals, or with the fewest footsteps as possible. In Advanced mode, certain levels are made more complex with the addition of moreobstacles and hazards.
