Have Heart is a straight-edge hardcore punk band that was formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 2002. Originally intended as a side-project, the band soon became the main focus for each of the members. In July 2003 they played their first show and in November a demo was released. The demo came to the attention of Think Fast! Records, who signed them for the release of the What Counts EP in 2004. This EP helped them to reach a bigger audience, resulting in several national tours. In 2005 they moved on to Bridge Nine Records, and in the following year they released The Things We Carry, their first full length. In 2007, the band toured through the U.S., Canada and Europe. In 2008 the band released their second full-length album on Bridge Nine, Songs to Scream at the Sun.

"Songs To Scream At The Sun is the coming of age story. It's about the growing process of a young kid shaking the chains of selfishness, but it's everything about what you lose and gain in that process of growing up." - Patrick Flynn

Have Heart launched onto the worldwide hardcore scene in 2006 with the release of their debut full-length The Things We Carry. The world of hardcore was caught by surprise, and calling the album “breakthrough” would be an understatement. Reviews were nothing short of flawless, with Punknews.org saying, “It's impossible for words to do this album justice.” The album received multiple “Hardcore Album Of The Year” nods and extensive press recognition such as being named one of AP’s Bands To Know. The band went from a regional hardcore band with a passionate following to Boston’s worldwide hardcore torch-bearers that would play every continent except Africa and Antarctica, selling out shows everywhere with Bane, Ceremony, Verse, Madball, Terror and even playing 50,000 person festivals in Columbia with Coheed & Cambria. So the ultimate question is this-how do they follow up the last two years?

Songs To Scream At The Sun is the result of those two years. Lyrically and vocally, frontman Pat Flynn puts forward nothing short of ten intense and chilling songs-opening up personally in a way he only hinted at for The Things We Carry. As frontman Pat Flynn said, “Songs To Scream At The Sun is the coming of age story. It’s about the growing process of a young kid shaking the chains of selfishness, but it’s everything about what you lose and gain in that process of growing up.” The songs have an honest, yet poetic reflection that digs deep into the private s that are shared by everyone-the deconstruction and dismantling of one’s life and the eventual rebuilding and rebirth. This is at times dark and depressing, but Flynn’s lyrics never lose hope in what allows people to get strength in these situations. And what’s so strong about the performance and lyrics, aside from the cliché of hardcore singers “meaning what they say” is that the perception of the lyrics-are they dark, depressing, positive, or hopeful?-is up to the listener to decide.

Songs To Scream At The Sun was recorded with Kurt Ballou of Converge at God City Studios. Combining Ballou’s signature grit and style of record with Have Heart’s style of music-it results in a dichotomy of clean, sharp drums and a variety of guitar tones and sounds that combined-does not hint at one particular or obvious influence. Musically, there are moments which are mid-tempo and melodic, there are moments that are classic hardcore anthems, and it’s balanced with times which are dark and atmospheric. It's an impressive accomplishment.

With hardcore having somewhat of a revival, it’s almost hard to even keep track of all the bands forming and breaking up day by day. It’s even harder to keep track of bands individually with so many of them sounding identical.

With that said, Have Heart are a breath of fresh . The band began playing in 2002, released a demo in 2003, and this EP, What Counts, in 2004. Now as they gear up to release their debut full-length through Bridge Nine, I’d like to call attention to a band who do traditional hardcore justice.

What Counts as a whole is an absolutely relentless attack on trend-hoppers, greed, and false friends. Their messages are relayed with conviction and sincerity, as portrayed in vocalist Patrick Flynn’s gravelly voice. Although the vocals are relatively unique, Have Heart throw some interesting melodies and time changes into the mix, slightly reminiscent of Youth of Today.

When it comes to the EP’s peak, the title track stands out among the rest with the lyrics “take a breath -- reawake -- call forth the dread in your way / subdue -- prevail -- triumph over every ~censored~ day / to persevere through -- is what counts.” “Dig Somewhere Else” begins with slightly heavier vocals and more of a consistent, less melodic sound. “Reind,” a song originally by Outspoken, wraps up the EP.

If cheesy, two-step parts aren’t your thing, fear not: Have Heart only incorporate them once into the release, during “Something More Than Ink,” a song about the band’s lasting values, which are “something more than ink -- on a page, on a t, on the back of my hand / something written in stone, words we wrote in stone.” If the song material sounds cliché to the genre, don’t brush them off until you’ve heard the dery.

Gang vocals make you want to give a stranger a black eye? Have Heart won’t overwhelm you. They appropriately scatter them throughout the release and don’t solely rely on them for appeal.

Despite What Counts only presenting four new songs with one cover and one song from their demo, it’s a powerful EP. A bit cleaner of production would have done this EP wonders, yet even without a richer, tighter sound, What Counts shows enormous amounts of potential. I can’t wait to see what Have Heart will do with more album time and a bigger production budget. Either way, Have Heart will be sure to remind you what counts in hardcore.
