°Û± The electronic project VNV ("Victory Not Vengeance") Nation was ±Û°
°Û± conceived in London in 1990 by Ronan Harris, debuting in May of ±Û°
°Û± that year with the 12-inch "Body Pulse." "Strength of Youth" ±Û°
°Û± followed a few months later, and at the end of the year Harris ±Û°
°Û± relocated to Toronto, where VNV Nation opened for Nitzer Ebb on ±Û°
°Û± their Canadian tour. After moving back to Europe, Harris ±Û°
°Û± released only a handful of compilation tracks in the years to ±Û°
°Û± follow before signing with the German label Discordia in 1995 to ±Û°
°Û± issue the full-length Advance and Follow. Three years later, VNV ±Û°
°Û± Nation resurfaced on another German label, Off-Beat, an alliance ±Û°
°Û± which generated the LP Praise the Fallen as well as the EP ±Û°
°Û± Solitary. Empires, which was issued with another European ±Û°
°Û± distributor Dependent, and on Metropolis in the U.S., followed ±Û°
°Û± in the spring of 2000. Singles such as "Standing" and "Dark ±Û°
°Û± Angel" were club mainstays, boasting Ronan Harris' love for ±Û°
°Û± pulsating club rhythms and his developing seascapes of dark ±Û°
°Û± ambient waves. Mix projects Genesis.1 and Genesis.2 followed ±Û°
°Û± that format in 2001, giving a sneak preview to VNV Nation's ±Û°

°Û± VNV Nation’s latest record is simply epic. From the resounding ±Û°
°Û± and optimistic opening of ‘Pro Victoria’ with its huge ±Û°
°Û± percussion and driving orchestral elements alongside the ±Û°
°Û± dance-orientated second track ‘Sentinel’. It’s clear from the ±Û°
°Û± first few minutes that the definitive futurepop band are back ±Û°
°Û± and on form moulding heartfelt and soulful music using “cold” ±Û°
°Û± electronic means. ±Û°
°Û± ±Û°
°Û± Musically, follow-up track ‘Tomorrow Never Comes’ could be the ±Û°
°Û± soundtrack to the perfect dream despite the negative lyrics, ±Û°
°Û± this one may go down as one of VNV’s best-loved tracks. Emotive ±Û°
°Û± keyboards intertwine perfectly within the skyscraping synth ±Û°
°Û± goodness for a beautiful-yet-deadly tune. ‘The Great Divide’ ±Û°
°Û± starts off with a fast tempo and some nifty rock-style beats ±Û°
°Û± that are soon broken by vast electronic waves and Ronan’s ±Û°
°Û± trademark soothing vocals. It's a and affecting track that ±Û°
°Û± will most certainly pull the listener in with its emphatic ±Û°
°Û± backing beats and evocative rhythm. In contrast, ‘Ghost’ is the ±Û°
°Û± standout of the album both lyrically and musically, it readily ±Û°
°Û± showcases how diverse the group can be. It’s a totally ±Û°
°Û± seductive, dark anthem created with pop sensibilities and ±Û°
°Û± heart-wrenching synth-lines. ±Û°
°Û± ±Û°
°Û± ‘Art Of Conflict’ is the album’s first really Industrial track, ±Û°
°Û± it’s heavy bass will burrow into your brain and stay snuggled in ±Û°
°Û± there for hours. Here, the influence of VNV on many of the ±Û°
°Û± greatest contemporary dark-electro acts in the UK including ±Û°
°Û± Uberbyte and Modulate becomes clear. ‘Art Of Conflict’ will be ±Û°
°Û± your new favourite dance tune. ±Û°
°Û± ±Û°
°Û± ‘In Defiance’ takes a similar approach, attacking right from the ±Û°
°Û± start with mammoth beats, cascading synths and sexy bleeps. ±Û°
°Û± Lyrically this is the best song on the album, and it is ±Û°
°Û± definitely one of the best things VNV has ever written. It’s a ±Û°
°Û± simple formula, but one that’s incredibly effective. This song ±Û°
°Û± is for Sophie Campaign and it’s for everyone who has ever stood ±Û°
°Û± up for what they believed in. This is one of the best tracks we ±Û°
°Û± have heard all year and you will not be disappointed. Next up, ±Û°
°Û± ‘Verum Aeternus’ is an anthem drawing on 80s pop and even some ±Û°
°Û± rock influences. This one will have fists pounding and bodies ±Û°
°Û± moving when the group break it out . The tune will create ±Û°
°Û± the perfect atmosphere whether you are on the dancefloor or out ±Û°
°Û± in a large field somewhere, it may also lead you in to a state ±Û°
°Û± of total euphoria...dangerous. ±Û°

°Û± Don’t worry though, ‘From My Hands’ will bring you back down. ±Û°
°Û± It’s a touching, piano-based ballad that sees all of VNV’s ±Û°
°Û± electronic shell stripped away for something that could turn ±Û°
°Û± into one of their defining songs, right up alongside ‘Illusion’. ±Û°
°Û± An intense feeling of loss and letting go engulfs this track and ±Û°
°Û± sadly, it’s something that most listeners will be able to ±Û°
°Û± identify with, but there is hope within the captivating words ±Û°
°Û± and well thought out music. ±Û°

°Û± The final offering on this is ‘Where There Is Light’ and this is ±Û°
°Û± a definite rock track with some beats and classic guitars ±Û°
°Û± which work well alongside some enchanting synths. Dare we say ±Û°
°Û± it, it’s almost like U2 gone electronic. This track offers up a ±Û°
°Û± nice change of pace and it serves a purpose as it ends the disk ±Û°
°Û± on a fine and uplifting note. ±Û°

°Û± VNV have always been able to blend bright and hopeful electronic ±Û°
°Û± sounds with dark and hard-hitting lyrics that take an informed ±Û°
°Û± look at the state of humanity. This has earned them a dedicated ±Û°
°Û± fanbase and a solid reputation. On this record the group don’t ±Û°
°Û± really break new ground except to head into slightly heavier ±Û°
°Û± territory on a couple of tracks which may be met with fire from ±Û°
°Û± die-hard fans. Unquestionably though, VNV have produced one of ±Û°
°Û± their best albums to-date. It’s a collection of accessible and ±Û°
°Û± very nearly flawless electro music that blends elements of ±Û°
°Û± Industrial, pop, dance and EBM for resounding results. Whatever ±Û°
